Jacques de Coning, born Hendrik-Theo Jacques de Coning in Port Elizabeth, grew up with a natural feel for Afrikaans music and the culture surrounding it. Not long after finishing school, he began writing songs, with one of his earliest compositions created in 1998 for the Griquas Rugby Team. It marked the start of a career shaped by curiosity, craft, and a willingness to try new sounds.
His debut album 'Kaniklani,' later reissued as 'Girl van die Klein Karoo' introduced him to national audiences. Tracks such as “Girl van die Klein-Karoo,” “Kom Dans Met My,” “Boerereggae,” and “Jannie Mag Nie Koor Sing Nie” showed his range, moving comfortably between pop, rock, and a unique Afrikaans boeremusiek-reggae flavour. His ability to mix familiar Afrikaans styles with unexpected twists set him apart. In 2002, 'Afrikaans My Trots' crossed the 100,000-sales mark, earning gold status and confirming his place among notable Afrikaans artists of the time. His catalogue continued to grow, including works like 'Veels Geluk' (2005).
Outside music, Jacques and his wife Lynn ran the Bushmans Bar and Grill, a family-centred restaurant that reflected the grounded way he lived. He also faced personal hardship, most notably the loss of his son Basil in 2014.
On 9 June 2019, Jacques passed away in a road accident in the Eastern Cape at the age of 52. His death drew heartfelt tributes from across the country.
